Back Sprain/Strain

A sprain refers to an overstretching injury of the ligaments in your spine, whereas a strain refers to an overstretching injury to your muscles. The majority of people sprain or strain their back when they combine lifting with twisting. The best way to avoid an injury to the low back is to use your legs when lifting, bending at the knees and keeping your back fairly straight. If you have to turn while lifting, move your feet, otherwise the strain of lifting while twisting can cause injury.

How our physiotherapists can help

After the injury, our physiotherapists can shorten your recovery time by helping to reduce the inflammation in your back.  Treatment modalities such as ultrasound, interferential current and acupuncture can help reduce pain and inflammation.  Once your symptoms are under control, we will provide you with proper stretching and strengthening exercises to ensure you have proper spinal mobility and solid core strength.  In addition, proper body mechanics and lifting techniques will be reviewed to reduce the chances of re-injury in the future.  Book an appointment today to let us help you get back to doing the things that you love!
