Degenerative Disc Disease
A disc is a jelly like, fluid filled sac that acts as a cushion between the bones of your neck (vertebrae). As a normal part of the aging process, these discs will gradually dry out and shrink over time. However, this process may be accelerated in some individuals, leading to a severe loss of height in one or more sections of the neck. This loss of height can increase rubbing of bone on bone, producing bone spurs and leading to increased pressure on the joints and the nerves exiting the neck. Symptoms can include headaches and chronic neck pain, as well as radiating pain, numbness and tingling into the arms. In addition, as the discs dry out and the height between the vertebrae decreases, changes in your neck posture and function can follow.
